A lot of young Filipinos work for long periods of time abroad, often on ships, to earn money to send home to improve the life standard of the whole family. Also they try to save extra money to start a business in the Philippines. The main reason for working abroad is that the safety, economy are one of the lowest in the region. Jobs that pay enough are hard to come by. The prospect to improve the standards of living in the Philippines are slim.
Working abroad gives the opportunity not to just earn more money but also to learn skills that will benefit them when they return home and start their own business. They stay in contact with family back home through Skype, social media and e-mail. Sometimes they have saved enough to go home for a short period of time or the employer finances the trip home. However more often they do not go home in years.
